MIA

Paper Planes

Whatever you think of Maya Arulpragasam – her flaking out of her European tour and supposed retirement from life in general hasn’t gone down too well – this cynical track about the daily nine-to-five grind, comparable to Pink Floyd’s ‘Money’ in sentiment, didn’t receive the respect it was owed on first release. The fact that its menacing machine-gun shots, which punctuate the “All I want to do is take your money” chorus, were censored on MTV is proof enough. And frankly, the defiance she’s shown in re-releasing this controversial record, resplendent with sassy spoken vocal and Clash sample, is simply inspirational.
