This troubled New Yorker bears a turbulent soul. Confessional or not, to sing “I’m not sure I want to stay alive/It’s so expensive, it’s cheaper to die” (‘The Debtor’) is to express a real soreness with life, something that permeates MBAR’s debut. Recorded with various Grizzly Bears, these dishevelled songs stagger boldly from the same corner of disaffected Americana that bred Micah P Hinson, The National, Bright Eyes and even Neil Young.
