5 NME Breakthrough Tracks You Have To Hear This Week

1. The ABC Club – ‘Disco’

As far as fluttery, jittering indie rock'n'roll goes, this Halifax five-piece have got their heads screwed on just so. Cute-as-a-button ditties and disheveled pants a plenty.

2. Clock Opera – ‘Alouette’

Scaling the upper regions of Breakthrough’s Most Popular chart, London four piece Clock Opera have already lent their remixing talents to the Phenomenal Handclap Band and Golden Filters. They’re no strangers to irony: “Concrete / Dutch pop / Melodramatic Popular Song” proclaims their Myspace. But if Alouette is anything to go by – a melting pot of Bjork’s Vespertine music boxes, hazy vocals and the occasional tribal drum – this lot deal in melodrama of the best kind.

3. Grandfather Birds – ‘Grandfather’s Bones’

One of numerous new indie acts coming out of the north east of England with a pretty 'out-there' understanding of song structures, and a passion for walls of drone.

Listen to the track and find out more about the band on their NME Breakthrough page.

4. Loose Talk Costs Lives – ‘Gold’

Disappointingly, Gold is devoid of anything Spandau Ballet. Instead, the Leeds/London lads cite American football as their chief influence. The new demo features mass harmonies galore, stuttering drums and shimmering guitar lines that collide in a middle eight reminiscent of Foals.

5. Mokh – ‘Kick The Beans’

Coming straight outta Minsk with a head full of dreams. Their words: "It's an instinctive whisper produced by the turbulent consciousness." Okayyy.
