Paul Weller
Sweet Pea, My Sweet Pea(Go! Discs)
This is what you might call scraping the bottom of the
barrel organ. Weller's produced some shamblingly retro stuff in his time but 'Sweet Pea, My Sweet Pea', with its one-man-band style rhythms and dosserish, hoarse vocals sounds like the malign
work of some desperate busker, with Uncle Albert from Only Fools
And Horses providing forlorn accompaniment on a clapped-out pub joanna. You can practically imagine Weller sitting outside Holborn station, a monkey with
a fez perched on his shoulder, cranking out this one. No-one's asking you to cut a hardstep/ ambient/techno/gabba modern classic, Paul, but you might want to get a wee bit more with the program, just for dignity's sake.
