Radiohead: Boxset

'This story-so-far boxset/USB stick containing the band’s six Parlophone albums, plus live mini-album...'

This story-so-far boxset/USB stick containing the band’s six Parlophone albums, plus live mini-album ‘I Might Be Wrong’, is essential. It would be even if it were only available on reel-to-reel tape. Coming as it does only a few weeks before the deluxe boxset version of ‘In Rainbows’, it arrives at a perfect time to show their progression.

1993’s ‘Pablo Honey’ comes from a time when they followed the pace rather than set it and if the lurching sound of its best song – you know the one – moping out of your speakers doesn’t elicit a weary sigh, then you probably think you can never hear ‘Wonderwall’ too many times.
‘The Bends’ is where it get serious. Almost everything on this album – ‘Just’, Street Spirit’, ‘Black Star’ – is great. Easily digestible, sure, but a mere hair’s breadth away from greatness.

That greatness was eventually attained in 1997 with ‘OK Computer’, a record that, even 10 years on, sounds like it’s from the future. Let’s face it, it’s a perfect album. From here, things get weird. ‘Kid A’, cobbled together from three years in the studio, was horrifying on first listen. Out went Thom’s sweeping vocals and Jonny’s six-string acrobatics, in came glitchy vocals and weird, nameless machines that they’d invented. Listen back to ‘Idioteque’ or ‘Morning Bell’ now, though, and you realise that not only is it not that scary, it’s actually pretty ace.

Its sister album ‘Amnesiac’ is intermittently brilliant; the notion that ‘Pyramid Song’ or ‘Like Spinning Plates’ might still be lying dormant on Thom’s laptop more than justifies its existence. Only 2003’s ‘Hail To The Thief’ disappoints, containing only five great songs. Even then, its excursions into glitch-rock and space-funk are fascinating mash-ups, and ‘There There’ is one of their finest moments. All pushing 40 and seven studio albums in, the rest of the world is still playing catch-up with Radiohead.

alan26uk let rick13 have an opinion beause to be honest, hes right, they have had some ok songs but some are so depressing and dull, therefore everyone doesnt think he is an idiot, you on the other hand...

Yes, I agree with alan26uk. Rick 13 you are a complete moron. It is obvious you don't get the beauty of Radiohead.
In regards to the NME review, I would hardly call Hail to the Theif a disappointment. There is the odd album filler on there (gloaming, backdrifts etc), overall still a 9/10 album and a better album than 99.9% of all the other bands out there could ever achieve.

Hey Riverboat song why don't you back to your collection f ocean color scene and kula shaker albums and suck it. PEOPLE ARE ENTITLED TO HAVE AN INFORMED OPINION, not a half thought out statement, I know that taste is to each their own but in the case of radiohead, to know them is to love them, any who thinks otherwise should go reform the so-solid-crew.

alan26uk, i am a big fan of all music, i will openly listen to anything, i play the guitar, bass and harmonica so my opinnion does count of what i write, i bet your a student or something aint u actually studying music cos the the things and way you write things makes you seem like a twat!!! Normal people who like music want real music. You want to try listening to something worth while with heart and soul like the stone roses or oasis
Chrisl85_aust the same applys 2 you, you litte twat!!! go n listen to the jam or something good like that.

I'm sure Radiohead wouldn't want certain types of people to be fans of their music. If you think the only worthwhile music was created by madchester bands, then you're very closed minded. I'm a huge fan of the madchester scene and music, but in my opinion no band (other than the Happy Mondays), are even on par with Radihead's music.
The difference between Radiohead and bands like the stone roses and oasis, is that Radiohead actually challege their listeners.

Now this 2 are gonna start saying that Pink Floyd is also depressing, Radiohead is the best band since the day thom decided to plug his first guitar. And for those who like to hear the same old music, same chords and same "i love you" type of songs, realize there is quite a lot of people thats sick of that. Oasis??......Please.
By the way im also a musician, it makes no difference

I agree with alan26uk. Rick13 you should be disappointed in yourself for being so ignorant. And Riverboat, yes i agree everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you are only defending Rick13 because you are in accord with him. To hark alan26uk for voicing his opinion negates your validity. In Ok Computer and In Rainbows only accentuates the brillance of Hail to the Thief, Kid A and Amnesiac etc. rather than overshadows them

i am a huge greek fan of both oasis and radiohead and what i have to say is that it's only music you bunch of morons!!those bands are propably laughing when they hear that people are analysing their music.both bands have written some of the best songs of recent history but also some of the dullest.get over it !!

Radiohead seem a wee bit of a bipolar mess to me. Digital Nothingness ... yes I said nothingness, it's what some of their songs are; tuneless and aimless .. just 4-10 minutes of experiments. Opposite to this, however, are great songs, with brilliant lyrics and musicianship, OK Computer is probably the pinacle of this, Karma Police and Electioneering....

Kid A, and the first CD from the new album, are more like the random musings of a child lost inside a synthesiser.

If people don't like Radiohead that's one thing. But if they don't understand them thats quite another.
In all honesty Kid A is a great album, but there are really only 7ish songs held together by admittedly beautiful instrumentals.
I can't really understand when people say Radiohead are depressing though. It's like when people say that about the Smiths. It shows they haven't attempted to go deeper than their reputation.
But yes, each to their own.

I think the review is a tad dramatic, the rest of the world is hardly 'playing catch up'. Although it's a decent attempt to describe Radiohead's career: intelligent lyrics, experimental sound, some great songs. However i was shocked when OK Computer was voted best album of all time on CH4. They are over rated in that respect. A bandwagon for all to jump on was created the day of that vote. Although there is of course no definitive best album of all time...... if there was it would have to be something even more poetic, even more experimental and sound far more beautiful than anything by Radiohead. I would personally suggest a few Pink Floyd albums. (Queue onslaught of 'thats just your opinion").

PS - the comment at the very top was clearly made by someone on a whim who has blatently downloaded a few tracks off livewire and is yet to listen to an album in it's epic entirity.

bobby_mobby.... i used to like radiohead when i was a kid, infact i actually got the bends on the day it came out, then when i got ok computer a couple of years later i saw the light n realised (I think they are shit!!!!)im not saying every1 has to hate them, any 1 whould think i have commited a crime by saying i dont like them. OASIS TILL I DIE.

Jan 16, 2008

rick 13, you are clearly a twat, to dismiss all but 4 radiohead songs is moronic, and im not a student but a music teacher, if you cant appreciate good music thats your lookout sunshine but surely you can admit that oasis havent released anything worth listening to since morning glory, they are a band that people who lack any talent look up to whilst swaggering around their bedroon with an empty can of redstripe they stole out of next doors rubbish miming the words to layla in their greasy mirror with their dad's old brown leather jacket on....

rick 13

Jan 30, 2008

ha ha i win, i love winding up radiohead fans cos you all feel you all have to write things so deep, like your teacher will read it and your gonna get an A* at UNI or something...idiots

Ah, watching people argue futilely on the internets over the world-shaking subject of a few Radiohad albums in a box is fun!
