Sigur Ros – ‘Valtari’

This record will maintain their fan base, but it won't attract a new one

In which the Icelandic troupe return from their hiatus with a startling new brostep direction. Not really, just joking. Longtime fans will be delighted to hear that ‘Valtari’ eschews the Coldplay-isms of 2008’s ‘Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust’ to retread the sweeping soundscape territory of 2002’s ‘( )’. If you’re not a convert to Sigur Rós’ ethereal, wide-eyed majesty, then this probably won’t do anything to change your mind. But if you are (or need a soundtrack to a documentary about polar bears in their natural habitat) then you will almost certainly get all in a lather about this. Business-as-usual has rarely sounded this beautiful.
