Smashing Pumpkins

American Gothic

Nice to see the Pumpkins are still doing things properly in an age where digital farts into the blogosphere count as ‘releases’. This four-track EP of acoustic songs recorded between breaks from touring comes in a proper case with lyric sheets and nice pictures of what look like tour restaurants. ‘The Rose March’ is blueprint Pumpkins, Billy Corgan’s otherworldy coo perfectly complemented by Jimmy Chamberlain’s military drumming, while elsewhere (on ‘Pox’), lyrics such as “Another dumb kid shot up/Another restless bitch still fucked” demonstrate they haven’t lost any of their bile.
