Written about the shock of learning that a friend has contracted HIV, ‘The Hell Song’ clearly opens a new chapter in the history of corporate punk. But can you be sensitive and worthy in the same big shorts you once regularly pulled down for cash on MTV? The answer, inevitably, is not quite. ‘The Hell Song’ lacks both the hyperactive fun of ‘Still Waiting’ and the emotional depth required to do its subject any justice. Recorded live, seemingly through their drum roadie’s sock, to add insult to injury.
