Single Of The Week - SUPER FURRY ANIMALS : Juxtapozed With U

Genius.

Originally conceived as a duet with East 17's Brian Harvey (he turned it down? He must
be mental!), this is a total surprise and an absolute delight: the Super Furry Animals
going pop with grace, style and total conviction. Not only does it employ a Prince-esque 'U'
and the word 'juxtapose' - with a 'z', yes
indeed - in its title, but at the business end
it bangs through swirly, dreamlike strings
and production so smooth you could snort cocaine off it. One second as devastating
as a tank through your stereo, the next as bouyant and chirpy as an inflatable panda, 'Juxtapozed With U' does the do in almost
every way imaginable then turns into Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder's 'Ebony
And Ivory' at the end, as all songs parading
any degree of greatness really should.

Most hearteningly of all, the Furries appear
to be on the verge of catapulting a record
about poverty and class hatred smack into
the Top Five - one of the most satisfying
forms of subversion there is. Genius. In your face, Brian Harvey!
