Superchunk : Hello hawk

A graceful, heart-witheringly perfect return from one-time grunge underdogs Superchunk, who have surprised many by evolving into one of the most prolific, pretty consistently excellent American bands of the decade. And 'Hello Hawk' D which opens with irresistibly spiralling guitar, builds fizzily into a soaring, teasing chorus and ends in a glorious fury of brass and strings D could well be their finest moment. It's difficult to discern what they're on about, though. Something about sitting in the garden wanting to be scooped up by a marauding specimen of large predatory fowl.

Still. This is pop, with dignity, strength of character and some mysterious flutter of genius that sends a little chill down your spine every time you hear it. Listen, Fixed Stars, and weep.
