Superthriller 2: The Return

Superthrillers

Superthrillers

Funk’s not dead as far as Superthriller are concerned, but it never quite comes alive for them either. Their third album starts off beguilingly, with ‘I Love You’ sounding like a stoned Basement Jaxx, but for the most part it sticks close to their template of Parliament and Prince-influenced house-lite. The thumping ‘Superthriller Motherfucker’ adds the requisite booty-shaking comedy chorus, with, “Fuck your mother, your mother, everybody just fuck your mother”, but it all teeters too close to white-funk naffness, and with the real Prince back in town, you have to wonder as to the point. Their organ bliss-outs, squelchy synths and lazy lysergic soul would have been fine when people still listened to Groove Armada, but now just sounds apathetic – unless you really were planning to party like it was 1999.
