Desperation can lead to some ugly things: marrying Liz Taylor, appearing on Big Brother, and cannibalising cigarette butts into one awful tar-bomb of a rollie being chief among them. It can lead to some pretty wonderful things too, like Talk Taxis’ paean to impending homelessness ‘I May Never’. What it lacks in bleeding-edge originality it more than makes up for in raw grot-punk exuberance – like early At The Drive-In getting the New Cross treatment. You need only hear Will White’s wounded croon/growl to be sold on the experience. Desperation has never sounded so delightful.
