From Here We Go Sublime

The Field

8 / 10 Sometimes, music has the power to floor you. ‘From Here We Go Sublime’ is that kind of record. Axel Willner – The Field – is a frighteningly inventive Swede who chops up fragments of samples, loops them and then bolts them on to beats to create a digital bubble bath. It may sound simple but it’s devastatingly effective. For one delicious moment, at the end of ‘A Paw In My Face’, he shows his hand, revealing Lionel Richie’s weepy cheese anthem, ‘Hello’, as the track’s base element. Elsewhere, the heady tech-drone of ‘The Deal’ nods towards ’90s sonic experimentalists My Bloody Valentine (who Willner’s a big fan of). A moving, emotional experience. Can someone pick us up?
