The Presets - 'Pacifica'

Australian duo release third album in keeping with frantic pace of modern electronic music

The Presets - 'Pacifica'

Album Info

  • Release Date: October 14, 2013
  • Label: Modular
5 / 10 Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes were an integral part of Australia’s early ’00s dance boom, alongside bands such as Cut Copy. But the popularity of the duo’s fusion of aggressive rock and thumping techno on records like ‘Apocalypso’ has fizzled out. So, in the spirit of keeping up with the frantic pace of modern electronic music, on third album ‘Pacifica’ The Presets experiment with smoothed-out synths of the M83 variety, mismatched minimal production, eerie ambience and – hey, why not? – some cheesy echoing vocals on ‘Ghosts’ and ‘It’s Cool’. It’s not awful, just bland, and lacks the bite that electro-pop records need to be lifted out of the purgatory that is mediocrity.
