The Verve

Rather Be

The Verve, Glasgow Academy (November 2). Ashcroft said little between songs, other than saying it was good to be back in Glasgow. When he took the stage, however, he strode to the mic and shouted 'this is music!', before launching into the track of the same name. Pic: Andy Willsher
Adult rock rules state that your bracing disco rock thumper must be followed by a haunting ballady one. And The Verve are doing as they should. Shitter than ‘On Your Own’, light years better than any of Ashcroft’s solo oeuvre, this is kind of the best we could have hoped for. Ashcroft directed the video; his idea being to use the same concept as ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’, except in a forest, and without bumping into people, or the epoch-defining song.
