The Wombats

Is This Christmas

Unsurprisingly, The Wombats have failed in the eternal competition to write a punk rock festive song as good as Fairytale Of New York. Not least because Christmas chez Wombats sounds just like every other ADHD guitar belch they’ve expelled but with over-excitable sleigh bells and lyrics about Back To The Future re-runs on telly. It’s enough to bring out your inner Scrooge.

Great review! This is arguably the worst Christmas song ever! Even worse than that Kim Wilde cover 20 years ago!

They have single handedly destroyed any warm glowing feelings I had about this festive time of year. Hearing that fat wobbling tartan clad popstrel straining to sing about back to the future has made me wish Id blacked out and hadn't woken up. Fuck off.

Christmas has never managed to let the indie kids have their turn, for a very long time now. The Wombats, with their new single 'Is this Christmas' most honestly is the best attempt we have seen in years. 'Fairytale of New York' only represents Christmas through nostalgia- its Irish charm and bell ringing fayre make it that way. The likes of Slade, Wizzard and even Lennon have never produced anything musically outstanding at Christmas Time and none are relevant to a generation after the late 1980's. The Wombats lyrically epitomise Christmas- it's drawbacks and the idea of sitting with the same re-runs every year while the moody Great Aunt in the corner gets on her high horse about politics. Red wing vs Left wing, red wine on the carpet- the song justifies it all!Uptempo indie beats provide a happiness that should not be overlooked or undermined. 'Is this Christmas'? I would certainly say so.

lisachandler33 - your comment is very hypocritical, how do you expect people to cheer up when untalented cretins like the wombats are singing songs that are as depressing as this one, just listen to the lyrics you idiot! Oh and in the wise words of milo2020, "you need to reassess your entire life"

i think that geetars guy is getting confused between the name of a song and what the band sound like....

I agree IndieWriter! Geetars have you actually ever heard the wombats music? If so then you'll know they are nothing like Joy Division. This song is not the best christmas song, but i think the wombats have been comendably brave in releasing it!
