The second of four all-new tracks from the Girls' forthcoming 'Ten' compilation
The writing was on the wall about this new [a]Girls Aloud[/a] song the moment it emerged that it was going to debut on Radio 2 today. The second of four all-new tracks from their anniversary compilation ‘Ten’, got its first play this lunchtime (November 13) from that little known disco doyenne Ken Bruce. As is the way with pop singles as Christmas approaches, this was to be a ballad.
Ballads were never why people loved Girls Aloud. Their best known, ‘I’ll Stand By You’, was a Pretenders cover, and lovely as it is, ‘Whole Lotta History’, say, doesn’t feature on many people’s tribute playlists.
This group’s legend was built on dizzyingly complicated prog-pop bangers, which pushed the envelope of what a pop song could achieve, blowing fluoro-pink gum bubbles as they went. That was why everyone was so excited when ‘Something New’ dropped, confirming that give-or-take, the formula remained intact.
Anyway, as ballads go, ‘Beautiful ‘Cause You Love Me’ ain’t bad, occupying a similar lyrical space to Sugababes’ ‘Unpretty’ rewrite ‘Ugly’, and a similar space in the canon to ‘Too Much’ by the Spice Girls. Which is to say, a healthy enough space, but for the Aloud’s fanbase of intellectual poptimists and hipster gays, it’s rathermore ‘one for the Mums’.
To complicate matters further, ‘Something New’ is not actually released until next Monday (November 19), this will be available on ‘Ten’ from November 26, but the ‘impact date’ is December 17, when they’ll shoot for the Christmas number one. Keeping up? Ken Bruce certainly wasn’t.
