The son of a crocodile farmer – what is it with popsters and their ridiculous parentage nowadays? – Muscles is the Australian outback’s number one exponent of teen-angst electro. A coveted title indeed. ‘Ice Cream’ is certainly the greatest song ever about how a bad day, full of woe and hateful strangers, can be rectified by dessert products, and it betrays Mr Muscles’ obvious love of distinctly cheesy ’80s synth-pop. Indeed, there’s something very Tears For Fearsy in his unsubtle, bullhorn vocal style, but his synths whoosh, bleep and squirble in all the right ways. Yes, that’s right – squirble.
