Ah, the West Coast of America, home of oxygen bars, earthquakes and gangsta rap. So much better than the East Coast. Or so reckons Dr Dre, Los Angeleno and arguably the most important hip-hop producer ever, and Snoop Dogg, sly-tongued, corn-rowed ladykiller of rap. Although not in the criminal sense, OK? This latest cut off the Dre album is a tidy enough essay on the usual low-life high jinks that both Dre and Snoop have long since left behind, enlivened by some sharp funk and (on the album version) the command to smoke weed every day. ‘Oh No!’, from the Lyricist Lounge compilation, by contrast, attempts to unite East and West, gangsta and law-abiding, on one track. Long Island, just as good as Long Beach? Well… Pharoahe Monche is as electrifying as ever. But for all its superior intentions and viscous verbals, ‘Oh No!’ lacks the cohesion of its slicker, more geographically partisan peer.
