Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle continue to rise head-and-shoulders above all the snivelling 'please-love-me' chart-cloggers...
In a world where girl groups are required to be as easy to assemble and full of innuendo as an IKEA chest-of-drawers, Destiny’s Child offer blessed riposte. A sassy three-pronged blitz of heavenly vocal chords and ballsy, take-no-shit attitude, Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle continue to rise head-and-shoulders above all the snivelling ‘please-love-me’ chart-cloggers. This, the title track from their forthcoming LP, is effectively a modern R&B take on Gloria Gaynor’s drag-queen-adored ’70s smash ‘I Will Survive’, unleashing a litany of positive affirmations over stirring strings and booming bass. Granted, it smacks of Self Help Book platitudes (“You thought that I’d be weak without you but I’m stronger/You thought that I’d be poor without you but I’m richer…”), and could easily
be used as a theme song for bad reality TV – but who cares? Co-produced and written by Beyoncé, this may allude to some real-life diss. If so, honey, the man’s a fool.
