Poor Nick Drake could never have guessed he’d become God for a generation of British melancholy-rock. His spectre looms large yet again in this double A-side from Goldrush – a band barely out of their teens who sound both sophisticated and truly weary. ‘Same Picture’ is all open spaces and rambling, alt-country loveliness; while ‘No Change Given’ is sweet, picturesque and yellow-round-the-edges. Goldrush should – and possibly will – join the ranks of Elbow, Turin Brakes, Alfie, Kings Of Convenience et al (in later years, it might take DNA testing to tell them all apart) before someone switches the lights on and demands the nation’s youth start making noise again.
