By jove, he can make a guitar gently weep – but Simple Kid smiles the wicked smile of the lo-fi prankster, and we love him for it. ‘Truck On’ speaks the language of a weary old bluesman, the Kid croaking bedraggled prayers to “[I]the good lord above[/I]” – but come chorus-time, it opens out into a sob-worthy hymn to hitting the road home, a ‘Sloop John B’ for The Beta Band generation. Meanwhile, judging by the harmonica-splatter of ‘Average Man’ – a testament to the mediocrity of humanity, or a warm tribute to Joe Public? – he’s angling to become the postmodern [a][/a]. And you know what? [a][/a] might just have the smarts.
