Yo La Tengo : Today Is The Day

Yo La Tengo : Today Is The Day

Several hundred years hard labour at the coalface of indie rock, and still New Jersey’s [a]Yo La Tengo[/a] have the nerve to make overstuffed EPs as good as this one. Time’s tight, so let’s skip over the terrific B-sides and the cover of folk legend Bert Jansch’s ‘Needle Of Death’ (not the most positive depiction of drugs in song, that one) and focus on the girlish, amped-up lullaby of lead track, ‘Today Is The Day’. Featuring a wash of fuzzy, chugging guitars, it gently flips out after about three minutes, transforming itself into a noise that should, in a just world, make The Raveonettes cry like babies. Very autumnal, too, if we’re going to be seasonal about these things.
