New Music Of The Day: Charlie Hilton – ‘100 Million’ (Featuring Mac DeMarco)

Gap-toothed non-slacker hero Mac DeMarco rounds off a year which has seen him go huge with an appearance as backing vocalist on this superb track by Blouse’s Charlie Hilton.

‘100 Million’ is quite beautiful, and much more summery than should really be allowed at this time of year. Laid back like Pink Floyd on Meddle but with the unmistakable slipshod, wacky air of pretty much everything Mac does well about it, it moves into big ballad territory in the final third, ever-so-slightly aping REM’s ‘Everybody Hurts’ – probably unintentionally, but nicely so.

Hilton is set to release what will be her debut solo album, Palana, on January 22 via Captured Tracks. The album was produced by Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jacob Portrait, although this track was helmed by Woods’ Jarvis Taveniere.
