Meatbodies – ‘Meatbodies’

Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin collaborator shows off his strut and swagger on debut solo LP

Meatbodies is the more-or-less solo project of LA musician Chad Ubovich. Time spent honing his craft in the background for a couple of similar one-man shows means there’s an audible swagger and strut to Meatbodies’ dirty garage. Having played in Ty Segall’s hard rock group Fuzz, and before that with Segall’s comparably raucous pal Mikal Cronin, this debut suggests Ubovich warrants similar levels of attention. His default mode – brisk canters with elements of beefed-up psychedelia and proto-punk – can be a little samey, but deviations occur, see the bludgeoning folk of ‘Dark Road’. Moreover, the album’s finest punk stomps, such as the justifiably-titled ‘Gold’, are impressive enough to recall a legend of this genre, the dear departed Jay Reatard.
