Paul Smith And Peter Brewis – ‘Frozen By Sight’

The Maximo Park and Field Music men team up for an avant-garde exploration

Maximo Park frontman Paul Smith can’t be interested in reviving his mid-‘00s level of indie-disco fame. If he was, he wouldn’t be teaming up with prog-pop composer Peter Brewis from Field Music. ‘Frozen By Sight’ is an anthology of Smith’s travel writing set to Brewis’ strings, piano and percussion, taking the pair from their native north-east to Barcelona and LA. Their unusual arrangements evoke all the emotions of globetrotting, from the spirited ‘Mount Wellington Rises’ to the lonely ‘Budapest’. The lyrics, meanwhile, drip with poetic detail (“Up close palm trees have hairs/Stone art deco smiling curves” – LA Street Cleaner). It’s another excellent addition to Brewis’ catalogue; for Smith, it’s a confident step towards the avant-garde.
