Various Artists: Last Night A DJ Saved My Life

Genre-spanning collection of dancefloor perennials

Considering the stellar line-up on Last Night..., maybe there should be more book-meets-music compilations. That said the book lends itself to this format, being that its Frank Broughton and Bill Brewsters exhaustive and brilliant study of the pivotal role of DJs in modern music. A revised edition has just been released and this eclectic album provides aural evidence to support the books claim. Flipping through Jamaican ska, original R&B to funk, Motown and electro on and on it goes. CD1 is almost entirely US-based (James Browns screeching, snorting Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose is the standout), CD2 chronicles the growing importance of the UK in dance music. Lenny D Ices We Are The IE, with its rave breakbeats and naff gunshots, may sound dated, but your dad probably got off his nut to it. Hang the DJ? Dont be silly.
