The Dead 60s, then: should we view their spot-the-difference appropriation of all things skankin’ as a loving homage or a shameless pastiche? Frankly, that’s a matter best resolved in a review of one of their own albums, but you couldn’t find better guides for this compilation. Beginning with Althea
& Donna’s peerless pop nugget ‘Uptown Top Ranking’ (which anyone with even a passing interest in this music will know), progressing through ‘King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown’ (ditto) and climaxing with The Maytals’ ‘Monkey Man’ (popularised by The Specials and a staple of Amy Winehouse’s live set), this is fairly entry-level stuff, but if you’re looking to learn more about reggae – and really, you should be – you could do a lot worse than start here.
