Virals - 'Strange Fruit'

Hencher’s intent to keep Virals strictly non-professional is working a treat

Virals - 'Strange Fruit'

7 / 10 Given that Virals have named themselves after a uniquely 21st century phenomenon, you may expect their music to be ‘bang on trend’. You’d be wrong. Shaun Hencher started Virals as a solo project in 2011, and they’re far removed from Lovvers, his previous, often great, fuzz-punk ensemble. The title track may threaten to turn into The Dandy Warhols’ ‘Bohemian Like You’, but the remaining three tracks trade in the power-poppish jangle of prime Teenage Fanclub (‘Heartbreaker’) and hint at C86 fandom (‘Summer Girls’). Hencher’s intent to keep Virals strictly non-professional is working a treat.
