Auguste Durand: Chacone Op. 62 video

2009 has seen big celebrations of significant anniversaries of Handel, Haydn, and Mendelssohn. However, one anniversary that has been overlooked (at least in the UK) is the centenary of the death in May 1909 of the influential French composer and publisher (Marie-) Auguste Durand (1830-1909), who established the eponymous publishing house in 1869, and went on to publish works of Saint-Saëns, Fauré, D'Indy, Debussy, Dukas, and other major composers. He also wrote some quality salon pieces that were once popular, and in the French fashion of the time, like Faure, Godard and others he issued numbered series of waltzes etc, of which the 'First Waltz' is most played today. The spelling of 'Chacone' is as it appears on the score. This is a really excellent pastiche of French 'galant' 18th c style, and is written with a light touch unusual in 19th c piano music. As such the outer sections require little or no pedal. It was dedicated to one Mlle. Hélène Montane. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear http://www.psear.co.uk
