Dame Vera Lynn to release new album on her 100th birthday

Wartime singer is also planning a charity concert

Dame Vera Lynn is set to celebrate her 100th birthday by releasing a new album.

The wartime singer will mark the occasion with re-orchestrated versions of her most famous music alongside original vocals.

Her new record will be released on March 17, three days before her birthday and will make Lynn the first singer to release a new album as a centenarian.

She has teamed up with Alfie Boe on ‘We’ll Meet Again’, Alexander Armstrong on ‘White Cliffs Of Dover’ and Aled Jones on ‘As Time Goes By’.

Lynn told The Guardian: “It’s truly humbling that people still enjoy these songs from so many years ago, reliving the emotions of that time. I was after all just doing my job as a singer – and it’s so wonderful for me to hear my songs again so beautifully presented in a completely new way.”

The singer is also planning a charity concert on March 18, which will raise funds for her children’s charity.

The record comes eight years after she became the oldest living artist to land a UK Number One album with ‘We’ll Meet Again’, at the time beating The Beatles to the top of the charts. Her new album will also mark 93 years in the industry.

That same year she got into a row with the British National Party (BNP) after they included one of her songs on a promotional CD without asking permission.

The CD, which was named after her 1942 song ‘White Cliffs Of Dover’, featured two Lynn songs, along with other pro-Britain wartime music by the likes of Glenn Miller, Flanagan and Allen and The Andrews Sisters.

Lynn’s solicitor, Nigel Angel, said at the time she had consulted her legal team over the matter.

“Her position is that the song was included without her approval,” Angel said. “She does not align with any political party. I will be discussing it with her further.”
