All the talking points from the 2019 Golden Globes – apologies, shocks, and spotlight-stealing water carriers

Tonight’s (January 6) Golden Globes might not have been the most dramatic in history but that doesn’t mean the glitzy ceremony didn’t give us plenty to talk about. From spotlight-stealing water carriers to the surprise snubs of the night, 2019’s edition of the annual event delivered when it came to things to joke about and debate on Twitter. Here are the biggest talking points of this year’s Golden Globes.

A star is born

Yes, A Star Is Born might have dominated in the nominations but another star was born tonight. Namely, one woman holding a tray of Fiji Water on the red carpet. She popped up in the background of several photos of the stars as they arrived but instead of trying to blend into the scenery, she stared right into the camera, often pulling better poses than the A-listers themselves.

A member of Dirty Pretty Things won a Golden Globe

If you’d have told us in 2007 that a member of Carl Barât’s Libertines rebound would one day win a Golden Globe, we’d probably have laughed in your face. But congrats to Anthony Rossomando, who did just that tonight. He was part of the songwriting team behind the meme-inspiring, A Star Is Born-soundtracking ‘Shallow’, alongside Mark Ronson, Lady Gaga, and Andrew Wyatt. Proof that you never know what life will bring.

Somebody call 999, Timothée Chalamet was robbed

Not to Kanye Mahershala Ali for his winning part in Green Book, but Timothée Chalamet not winning Best Supporting Actor is a big faux pas. He was nominated for playing teenage meth addict Nic Sheff in Beautiful Boy, one of the most devastating films to be released in recent memory. Alongside Steve Carrell, who plays Sheff’s dad David, Chalamet delivered a performance that took you into the heart of addiction and made you feel skin-crawlingly uncomfortable and hopelessly desperate from the other side of the screen. Here’s hoping Timmy gets the recognition he deserves at the Oscars next month.

Gaga and Cooper didn’t reign

Before tonight’s ceremony began, the smart money would have been on A Star Is Born to sweep the board, with nominations in Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Song, and Best Motion Picture – Drama. Yet each category, apart from original song, brought a new surprise. Gaga, who seemed to be a shoe-in for her category, was passed over for Glenn Close. Rami Malek was given Best Actor over Cooper. And the final award of the night, Best Motion Picture – Drama, went to not the critically adored remake but the critically reviled Bohemian Rhapsody. What could this mean for the Oscars?

Olivia Colman is a national treasure

Any appearance Olivia Colman made onstage tonight was a delight. From when she gigglingly messed up reading from the autocue when she, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz reminded the audience of The Favourite’s charms to when she called her co-stars her “bitches” and excitedly raced through her acceptance speech for Best Actress In A Musical Or Comedy, she proved herself to be the shining star of the night.

The spirit of change was still present

Last year, the Golden Globes felt like a moment of change. It was the first major awards ceremony post-Weinstein and his presence was felt, despite his absence. Activists were invited as plus ones, stars wore Time’s Up pins, and acceptance speeches were pointed and political. This year, that spirit carried over – perhaps not in such headline-grabbing ways, but still very evident. Glenn Close urged women to find personal fulfillment outside of society’s expectations of them, Regina King pledged to ensure the teams of all the projects she works on are made up of at least 50 percent women, and stars wore Time’s Up bracelets to continue to raise awareness for the campaign.

Emma Stone gave an impromptu apology

During the opening monologue, Sandra Oh called out A Ghost In The Shell and Aloha for whitewashing Asian roles. The star of the latter, Emma Stone, was in the room and made her feelings known, despite not being near a microphone. In the background, you could hear her yell “I’m so sorry!” Wonder if Scarlett Johansson would have done the same?
