‘Black Mirror’ star Will Poulter explains why he quit social media

"It was a sum of things"

Bandersnatch star Will Poulter has discussed why he quit social media, revealing his decision had nothing to do with the Black Mirror movie.

The British actor, who plays celebrated programmer Colin Ritman in the interactive movie, announced his decision to quit Twitter in a lengthy statement last week.

But while it was initially believed that online bullying may have motivated his decision, Poulter has confirmed that this definitely isn’t the case.

“It was a sum of things, informed by lots of different aspects of my experience with social media,” Poulter explained to RadioTimes.com.

“There were some unrelated conversations that happened to be happening on social media – unrelated to the project – that were kind of negative and unnecessary.

“‘I didn’t benefit from reading them and responding to them. And I would like to think no-one really benefits from putting that into the ether, the kind of negativity that I witnessed. So I just thought the best thing to do was take a step back.”

Poulter clarified in his initial statement: “There are positives to enjoy and inevitable negatives that are best avoided. It’s a balance I have struggled with for a while now and in the interest of my mental health I feel the time has come to change my relationship with social media.”
