French rapper MHD arrested and charged with “voluntary manslaughter”

The charge links to an incident that took place in July 2018

French rapper MHD has been arrested and charged with “voluntary manslaughter” together with three other men.

The 24-year-old rapper, who real name is Mohamed Sylla, has been charged in relation to the death of a 23-year-old man, Loïc K, who was killed following an incident in north-east Paris last July.

As reported in The Guardian, the man’s death was described as “purely gratuitous” by French police who said the man was kicked, beaten and stabbed in the attack in which a dozen individuals were involved. The incident was reported as a fight between rival gangs from the 10th and 19th arrondissements.

According to French newspaper Le Monde, the rapper was arrested on Tuesday (January 15) and charged yesterday (July 17). His lawyer, Elise Arfi, has said that the rapper “denies any involvement in this brawl”, adding “his presence at the scene of the crime has not been proven.” Reports suggested that his car was allegedly witnessed near the scene of the crime.

Arfi added that MHD had “never been involved in fights between rival gangs” and that the car belonging to the rapper “[had been] used by individuals identified by investigators as those who committed this deadly aggression.” She also revealed that the rapper had been in touch with police in July “as soon as he became aware” of its use in the attack.

Arfi also said that she will be appealing MHD being placed in custody due to lack of any previous “judicial record.”

MHD is one of the most successful rappers in France with his self-titled 2016 debut and follow up ’19’, released last year, both reaching Top 3 positions in France.
