Tolkien: Watch Nicholas Hoult star as ‘Lord Of The Rings’ author in first biopic trailer

"It's about fellowship."

The first trailer for Tolkien has been released, and it provides our first glimpse of Nicholas Hoult as legendary Lord of The Rings writer J.R.R. Tolkien.

Set for release in May 2019, the biopic follows the formative moments in Tolkien’s life that ultimately influenced the creation of his most famous work.

In the first trailer, we see Tolkien heading off to the Battle of the Somme with his close friends – a moment in his life which is said to have heavily influenced his work. As the scenes of the infamous battle play out, they eventually transform into the hellish battlefields of Mordor that Tolkien so famously depicted.

Elsewhere, we see a brief look at the legendary author’s relationship with wife Edith Bratt, portrayed by Lily Collins.

“It’s a story about journeys,” Tolkien tells his wife after she asks to hear a story.

“The journeys we take to prove ourself, it’s about adventures and magic beyond anything that anyone has ever felt before.”

He aptly signs off: “It’s about fellowship.”

An official synopsis also confirms that the film “explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school”.
