Damon Albarn’s Africa Express announce new London show

The gig will take place as part of the celebrations surrounding the first London Borough of Culture year

Damon Albarn‘s Africa Express have announced a one-off London show which will take place next month.

The cross-cultural collective, which was co-founded by Albarn, will perform at an event which will usher in the beginning of the first London Borough of Culture year, which has been awarded to Waltham Forest for 2019.

The show, titled ‘Africa Express: The Circus’, will take place on March 29 at Leytonstone’s Wanstead Flats. A number of special guests, including The Good, The Bad & The Queen and Django Django, will perform on the night.

Tickets for the show go on general sale on Monday (February 18) at 10am, while a pre-sale for Waltham Forest residents is now ongoing – you can grab tickets here.

Speaking about the special gig, Albarn said: “Growing up in a multi-racial community like Leytonstone had a profound effect on me as a boy, being so near to magical places such as Epping Forest… The Wanstead Flats helped define who I am, so this is a great honour personally.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan added: “Despite London’s position as an international culture capital, too many young Londoners do not have access to our city’s exceptional cultural institutions and feel unable to get involved. London Borough of Culture is a real gamechanger – it puts culture at the heart of local communities and ensures young Londoners can access the transformative power of art and music. Africa Express: The Circus will be a spectacular show, bringing together artists from across the world in Waltham Forest.”

Last month, it was rumoured that Albarn had been working with EDM DJ and producer Flume.
