Lewis Capaldi tells us what’s on his Tinder bio and his dream of getting ‘hot, sweaty male dancers’ for upcoming tour

He says his debut "is not the best album in the world, it's not the worst, but it's worth the money and you should buy it"

Lewis Capaldi spoke to NME on the red carpet of the BRIT Awards 2019 last night, where he spoke of what the world has come to expect of him. Watch our full video interview with Capaldi above.

The singer-songwriter was nominated for the BRITs Critics Choice Award, which was won by Sam Fender. Capaldi appeared satisfied but less than celebratory, as he joked that “we’re all skating through life just fine” and that he’d be avoiding the Buckfast as “it gives me a warm cuddle, but also sends me mental.”

Asked about what to expect from his debut album ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’, Capaldi said: “There’s definitely more full band stuff. Everything so far has been quite ballad-y. There are some ballads on it. Well, it’s basically all ballads. So if that’s not your thing then steer clear.

“There’s some stuff on there that people might be surprised to hear. Maybe not; people might just go, ‘Oh yeah, middle of the road pop music, love it’. It’s not the best album in the world, it’s not the worst, but it’s worth the money and you should buy it.”

Being a relatively new artist, Capaldi said that there were certain misconceptions about his sound – mainly that he was a ‘soul singer’. “I think soul singers are much better singers than I am,” he admitted. “People like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding – I do not put myself in that category. Other than that, people have got it fucking bang on: chubby guy, a bit weird looking, sings songs, they’re all sad.”

Is that his Tinder bio?

“Well, my Tinder bio for the minute is: ‘BRITs Critics Choice nominee, I almost scored a top bin once on Soccer AM (not televised), I have one dog and I’m very good at fighting’.”

Speaking of his time on Tinder, Capaldi added: “It’s a barren experience for me, man. I’m not very successful at all.”

As for his upcoming tour dates, the young Scot said the shows might be a little more dramatic than you’d expect.

“We had topless male dancers in London last year, from the video ‘Grace’ where I play a male stripper,” he told NME. “We had pyro and dancers, and it was class. If we could tour with dancers everywhere we went then it would be fucking amazing. I would have male topless oiled up dancers doing sexy full-on routines, but just to my ballads. Male sweaty dancers grinding up on each other, and it would be fucking brilliant.”

Capaldi releases his debut album ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ on May 17, before a full UK tour follows in November.
