Watch out, Mario! A man called Bowser is taking over as the head of Nintendo America

Uh oh...

In news that will surely send a shiver down Super Mario’s spine, Bowser has taken over as the head of Nintendo in America.

While it sounds like a reason to panic, the tiny plumber can rest easy. It’s been confirmed that a man called Doug Bowser will take over from retiring head Reggie Fils-Aime in April.

Mr Fils-Aime, who has secured huge popularity among Nintendo fans, commented: “With a name like Bowser, who better to hold the keys to the Nintendo castle?”

He added: “Nintendo owns a part of my heart forever.  It’s a part that is filled with gratitude – for the incredibly talented people I’ve worked with, for the opportunity to represent such a wonderful brand, and most of all, to feel like a member of the world’s most positive and enduring gamer community.

Here’s the actual Doug Bowser with Mario

“As I look forward to departing in both good health and good humour, this is not ‘game over’ for me, but instead ‘levelling up’ to more time with my wife, family and friends.”

While Nintendo is primarily based in Japan, the gaming giant’s US arm is tasked with distributing their most popular titles and leading talks with third-party game developers.

Responding to the announcement on Twitter, technology writer Joshua Topolsky joked: “I’m being told the new Nintendo boss has plans to kill the Mario character off.”

Thankfully, Mr Bowser’s plans for the firm are all together less nefarious.

“Rest assured, we will continue to build on his work to evolve and expand our brand, furthering Nintendo’s global mission of creating smiles. There are millions more of those to come.”
