The Inbetweeners‘ James Buckley has said that he doesn’t want to tarnish the legacy of the iconic show further, following the negative reaction to its reunion episode.
The Fwends Reunited show, which aired over the New Year, was met with criticism from fans who thought the special would be a new episode of the hit comedy series, rather than a programme of interviews and quizzes.
Following the backlash to the Jimmy Carr-hosted reunion, Buckley – who portrayed Jay Cartwright – shared an apology to viewers. “Feeling pretty hated right now,” the actor tweeted. “I’m sorry to anyone who feels let down with [the show].”
Later, Buckley elaborated on what he believed went wrong on Fwends Reunited – explaining that he thought it would be “impossible to fuck up”. Now, the star has said that the negativity has put him off any potential reboot of The Inbetweeners in the future.
“It was maybe a mistake doing that reunion,” he said in an interview with Heart Radio. “I think, especially after the reunion, me personally, I don’t want to ruin The Inbetweeners any more. At the moment, I wouldn’t want to go anywhere near it.”
Stating that he’s now “not sure we would be able to do it good enough”, Buckley added: “It’s difficult to come up with reasons why we shouldn’t do any more, we all love each other we all get on really well. It’s the best job in the world. We get paid really well to do it.
“All we do is turn up and make each other laugh all day long and they sort of make a TV show around us.”
Meanwhile, The Inbetweeners‘ Emily Atack has recently spoken out about being cut from the reunion episode. She is reported to have discussed “snobbery” behind-the-scenes of the one-off comeback.
