Damon Albarn’s Africa Express announce fifth album and release new EP ‘MOLO’

The collective have shared four new tracks worked on by Western and African musicians

Damon Albarn’s Africa Express have announced a new album and have released a new EP called ‘MOLO’.

The new four-track record was released today (March 25) with its title taken from the word for “hello” in the South African language of Xhosa.

As is traditional for projects released by Africa Express, ’MOLO’ was created by Western and African artists over the course of a week-long collaboration. Gruff Rhys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, Ghetts, Mr Jukes (aka Bombay Bicycle Club frontman Jack Steadman) and more flew to Johannesburg to work with local artists including Blk Jks, Infamous Boiz, Morena Leraba, and Phuzekhemisi.

Although a release date and tracklist are yet to be confirmed, the collective will release a full album this summer on the new Africa Express Records label.

Later this week (March 29), Africa Express will perform a one-off show in a circus tent in the London area of Leytonstone as part of the Waltham Forest London Borough of Culture celebrations.

The gig will see the likes of Albarn, Afrikan Boy, Georgia, Django Django, Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell, Imarhan, Jockstrap, Kinshasa Sound System, Slaves, Onipa, Khaladjula, Michael Kiwanuka, Tony Allen, The Good, The Bad & The Queen, and more appear.

Albarn’s most recent release before ‘MOLO’ came in the form of The Good, The Bad & The Queen’s first album in 11 years, ‘Merrie Land’. In a three-star review, NME wrote: “Ruminations on a post-Brexit nation from a bunch of middle-aged musicians is, perhaps, less essential than it seems to deem itself, but there are probing thoughts and moments to make [the album] worth sticking with.”
