K-pop singer Roy Kim charged with sharing an obscene photo

The singer is the latest musician to be booked in a growing scandal in Korea

K-pop singer Roy Kim has been charged with sharing an obscene photo in a group chat, it has been reported.

The musician is the latest to be booked in the scandal over secret filming and sexual misconduct in South Korea.

According to the Korea Herald, Kim was charged earlier today (April 4) after the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency told him to appear for a police investigation following the photo being found in a group chat room that included Jung Joon Young. Police have not confirmed whether Kim took the photo in question.

Kim has yet to comment on the charge, however his agency, Stone Music Entertainment, released a statement earlier this week, according to E! News. It read: “Roy Kim is currently studying in the United States and is arranging his schedules so that he can fly back to Korea as soon as possible for the investigations.”

The 25-year-old won the fourth season of the Superstar K singing competition in 2012, the same season that Jung also participated in. He was arrested last month (March 21) for allegedly sharing videos of a sexual nature without the consent of the women who appeared in them. Jung apologised to the victims and “everyone who has showed affection for me.”

Seungri, a member of the K-pop band Big Bang, was also allegedly a member of a chatroom in which Jung shared the videos. He is currently being investigated by the police over charges of supplying prostitutes but has denied all the allegations against him. Police have also arrested another member of the chat – a former employee at the Burning Sun club owned by Seungri.

Last year, thousands of women protested in Seoul, calling for tougher sentences for people who were caught secretly filming women, known as “molka” in South Korea. In 2017, over 5,4000 people were arrested for molka related crimes, but fewer than two percent of that number were jailed.
