Marvel boss reassures fans that Deadpool won’t change following Disney-Fox merger

"Why would we change it?"

Marvel boss Kevin Feige has reassured fans that the ‘Deadpool’ character won’t be changing following the merger of Disney-Fox.

There were fears amongst fans that Deadpool wouldn’t fit into the more family friendly merger but Feige has insisted that the merger won’t alter Ryan Reynold’s character.

Speaking to Variety, Feige said: “When we were purchased, Bob [Iger] said to us, ‘If it’s not broke, don’t fix it’…There’s no question that Deadpool isn’t working, so why would we change it?”

Feige also revealed that he is excited about the potential the new merger holds. He said: “We spent 12 years at Marvel Studios really embracing and digging into all the stories of characters who had never been brought to the screen before.

“There would be times when we’d have a supporting player or a reference point or something for a movie and legal would go, ‘Don’t forget that character’s on that other list and you don’t have access to it.’ I’m not talking about Professor X or Wolverine, but there are thousands of characters in those brands, and we’d shrug and go okay and figure out another solution. It will be nice to not have to do that.”

Recently, Feige also discussed Marvel’s plans to include more LGBTQ characters, which are slated to be included in their heavily-rumoured The Eternals adaptation.

Speaking to iO9, Feige was asked about whether the studio has plans to increase their LGBTQ representation. “Well it’s accurate in that we’ve talked about [it for] a long time.

“You look at the success of Captain Marvel and Black Panther. We want the movies to reflect the audience and we want every member of our global audience to see themselves reflected on the screen. And that’s what we’ve been doing for a long time. And certainly, that’s what we’re focusing on going forward.”
