‘Let’s Go Surfing’ was everywhere last year – but The Drums’ Jonathan Pierce isn’t giving anything away about whether it’ll be back. We chatted to the leadman earlier this summer about their appearance at Bestival.
It’s been a while – what’s new?
“The spirit of the band is the same, but the line-up has changed. Jacob is now playing synthesizers and Connor’s now on guitar. We have a new guitar player, Myles [Matheny], and our friend Chris [Stein] is on drums. There are no more backing tracks. It’s such a pain to bring them on the road, and the show is better than ever now.”
What’s your fancy dress costume of choice?
“I’ll probably be wearing something less fancy than I should. I’ve been wearing the same sweatshirt every day since we got off tour three months ago. I guess it’s time to put it away.”
The Cure are headlining – an important band for you?
“A couple of my teenage years were devoted to the music of The Cure. Now I just like their hits. ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, ‘Just Like Heaven’ and ‘Pictures Of You’ are perfect pop songs and I’m sure influence my writing.”
Last year you scrapped ‘Let’s Go Surfing’ from setlists. Are you bringing it back?
“I think we are gonna have a lot of fun, all of us.”
