Brit Awards 2012 – Our Predictions

It’s the time of a year again, where unlikely duets and mash-ups are wheeled out onstage at the O2 Arena, and the red carpet is littered with more fake tan and exposed cleavage than an episode of TOWIE. It’s the Brits and here’s our guide to the nominees.

British Male Solo Artist

  • Ed Sheeran
  • James Blake
  • James Morrison
  • Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
  • Professor Green

Deserves to win: James Blake, because maybe a BRIT will spur him into make a second album.
Prediction: The Brits always favour their own, so Sheeran’s a shoe-in.
Bookies’ favourite: Ed Sheeran 1/3

British Female Solo Artist

  • Adele
  • Florence And The Machine
  • Jessie J
  • Kate Bush
  • Laura Marling

Deserves to win: Kate Bush, because without her, half the artists nominated wouldn’t have a career.
Prediction: Come on. You don’t need us to tell you that.
Favourite: Bets are off. Most major bookies won’t take bets, as it’s assumed Adele will sweep the board.

British Breakthrough Act

  • Anna Calvi
  • Ed Sheeran
  • Emeli Sande
  • Jessie J
  • The Vaccines

Deserves to win: Anna Calvi is the only act on this list that has a completely different look, sound and vibe. And as if Jessie J’s a breakthrough act – she had a number 2 single in 2010!
Prediction: It’s going to be Sheeran, isn’t it?
Favourite: Ed Sheeran 2/5

British Group

  • Arctic Monkeys
  • Chase And Status
  • Coldplay
  • Elbow
  • Kasabian

Deserves to win: Kasabian. Only if they promise in their acceptance speech to name their follow-up ‘Stegosaurus’.
Prediction: Coldplay. If having Rihanna on your side won’t get you a Brit, what will?
Favourite: Coldplay 1/12

British Single

  • Adele – Someone Like You
  • Ed Sheeran – The A Team
  • Example – Changed The Way You Kissed Me
  • Jessie J ft Bob – Price Tag

  • Olly Murs ft Rizzle Kicks – Heart Skips a Beat

  • Pixie Lott – All About Tonight
  • The Wanted – Glad You Came

Deserves to win: Military Wives. A charity single with a heart. And anything’s better than ‘Price Tag’.
Prediction: ‘Glad You Came’. Without a doubt. Track of the year. McCartney wept when he heard the lyrics, and knew his prowess had been surpassed.
Favourite: Same as with female artist, there’s no point even pretending.

Mastercard British Album Of The Year

  • Adele – 21
  • Coldplay – Mylo Xyloto
  • Ed Sheeran – +
  • Florence & the Machine – Ceremonials
  • PJ Harvey – Let England Shake

Deserves to win: We’ll chuck in a vote for PJ – for being the only British artist to make an album actually about Britain.
Prediction: 21 – the amount of awards Adele’s going have won by the end of the year.
Favourite: Adele 1/20

International Male Solo Artist

  • Aloe Blacc
  • Bon Iver
  • Bruno Mars
  • David Guetta

Prediction: Walking remix, David Guetta.
Favourite: Bruno Mars 1/3

International Female Solo Artist

  • Beyonce
  • Bjork
  • Feist
  • Lady Gaga
  • Rihanna

Deserves to win: Beyonce. Did you headline Glastonbury while pregnant, Feist? Or you, Lady Gaga? No. Didn’t think so.
Prediction: We’d like Bjork and her ‘Biophilia’ project to get a statuette, but it’s not likely, is it?
Favourite: Rihanna 1/7

International Group

  • Fleet Foxes
  • Foo Fighters
  • Jay Z/ Kanye West
  • Lady Antebellum
  • Maroon 5

Deserves to win: Jay-Z and Kanye West. ‘Watch The Throne’ was a bona fide classic – and the sound of two musicians having a ball.
Prediction: Nobody could ever want to upset lovely lovely Dave Grohl, so the award’s as good as his.
Favourite: Foo Fighters 3/10

International Breakthrough Act

  • Aloe Blacc
  • Bon Iver
  • Foster the People
  • Lana Del Rey
  • Nicki Minaj

Deserves to win: Lana Del Rey. She’s the only artist on the list that’s gone from zero to hero in under six months – Bon Iver’s on his second album.
Prediction: Nicki Minaj. Nothing can argue with ‘Superbass’.
Favourite: Lana Del Rey 4/5

British Producer

  • Paul Epworth
  • Flood
  • Ethan Johns

Deserves to win: Paul Epworth. The sound behind ’21’.
Prediction: Paul Epworth – anything even connected to Adele will win. She’s getting an award just for showing up.
