The first weekend of Coachella ran from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 April and contained many more surprise onstage collaborations than anyone was expecting – many of them by pop artists. Here’s a selection of 12 great team-ups from over the first weekend.
1. Kesha & Zedd
Kesha has been trying to escape a contract that binds her legally to her producer, Dr. Luke, for years. In her first live performance since the most recent part of her lawsuit, in February, she joined Zedd onstage to perform ‘True Colors’.
2. Grimes & Janelle Monáe & HANA
After a little screamo moment 10 minutes into her set, post-‘Realiti’, Grimes brought Janelle Monáe out at about 10:45 in the below clip, where the two performed ‘Art Angels’ album cut, ‘Venus Fly’. together. HANA, Grimes’ recent tour support act, was also up onstage the whole time, too.
3. T.I. & Anderson .Paak
Dr Dre’s big new signing made a huge splash with lauded second album ‘Malibu’, released earlier this year. He was joined by T.I. to play the rapper’s hits ‘About The Money’ and ‘Bring ’em Out’:
4. Guns N’ Roses & AC/DC’s Angus Young
The shorts-loving AC/DC man was the surprise guest of Guns N’ Roses’ set, where he played AC/DC classics ‘Riff Raff’ and ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’ with them. It had just been announced that Axl Rose will be joining AC/DC as frontman for the rest of their tour, to replace Brian Johnson, who has been advised by doctors to stop touring if he wants to save his hearing. What better start than this?
5. Rihanna & Calvin Harris
Not such a surprise, this one, but still a banger.
Este Haim, Lorde and Taylor Swift were enjoying it too.
6. Kanye & A$AP Rocky & Jack Ü & Tyler, The Creator
Kanye did ‘Father Stretch My Hands Part 1’ (from latest album ‘The Life Of Pablo’) with A$AP Rocky, who served mainly as his hype man, until his mic cut out and no one could hear him any more.
He came out and just sort of stood there for ‘Power’ with Jack Ü, too.
Perhaps his best Coachella moment was this impromptu footrace with Odd Future’s Tyler, The Creator. He lost, though, which is sad.
7. Seal & Gallant
R&B legend Seal has been something of a mentor to Gallant for a while now, but this was possibly his most public blessing of the young talent from Maryland. They performed Seal’s 1991 song ‘Crazy’, and Gallant’s own hit ‘Weight in Gold’.
8. Disclosure, Sam Smith & Lorde
This lot have performed together loads of times, so it was all very slick. Here’s Sam Smith joining the Lawrence brothers for ‘Omen’:
And Lorde, for ‘Magnets’.
9. Ice Cube & Snoop Dogg
The NWA man brought out his mates MC Ren and DJ Yella for NWA classics ‘Straight Outta Compton’ and ‘Fuck Tha Police’. Then Snoop Dogg came on to do Dr Dre’s ‘The Next Episode’. What a day.
10. Halsey & Brendon Urie from Panic At The Disco!
The hugely popular popstar aka Ashley Nicolette Frangipane brought out Urie for her own song ‘New Americana’, before seguing into one of Urie’s – ‘I Write Sins Not Tragedies’
11. Sufjan Stevens & the spirit of whimsy
The spirit of whimsy doesn’t just work with anyone. Here it graced Sufjan’s stage as he covered himself with balloons, on ‘Chicago’…
…and put on some swan wings during ‘Seven Swans’, before breaking his banjo on the stage…
… and finally pulling out a tiny recorder on ‘Vesuvius’. There were neon outfit changes for all three, obviously.
