Coldplay, ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’ – You Review

Coldplay premiered their new single ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’ today at midday and it goes on sale digitally in the UK from midnight on Saturday (June 4).

First impressions? In some ways it’s alarmingly pop. The synth-heavy intro and lyrics, “I turn the music up, I’ve got my records on” and “I feel my heart stop beating to my favourite song” all seems a bit… dare we say it, Sophie Ellis-Bextor-esque.

Sonically, though, we’re in familiar territory. It’s reminiscent of ‘X&Y’ with its electro twist, while the epic chorus of “It was a wa-wa-wa-wa-waterrrrfall” and the military marching drums are more ‘Viva la Vida’.

Pretty much an amalgam of their previous efforts, then, and not exactly a massive departure. But were we expecting (or even wanting) something new?

What have people been saying online then?

On Twitter, BBC 6 Music presenter @matteveritt wrote, “Last half of the new #coldplay track sounds a bit like The Wonder Stuff covering Born Slippy #ravedizzy”

While @GeorgieRogers commented: “Never before has Chris Martin sounded more like Bono!”

On the band’s official Facebook page, fans were positive:

Jarne Robrechts said, “Damn Coldplay, you did it AGAIN! You’re the best!”

While Fabian Bowes-Richley commented, “This is going to get No. 1 FOR SURE!”

And Raphael Smith added: “I didn’t expect this (in a good way).”
