Birthday Girls are a sketch comedy trio who made us laugh our pants off at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year with their show Sh!t Hot Party Legends. We wouldn’t be surprised to see on TV before long, and in fact one of them, Beattie Edmondson, is already on BBC Three’s Josh. They’re bringing their banging club-set sketch show to London’s Soho Theatre from November 15-19 and have made us an ultimate pre-lash playlist to get everyone in the mood. Let Beattie, Rose and Camille introduce themselves via the tunes that get them in the mood for some serious sketching.
‘This Is What You Came For’ – Calvin Harris Ft. Rihanna
WHY WE LOVE IT: It’s chill, but it also builds anticipation for the night to come. The perfect way to kick things off.
WHEN TO PLAY IT: As people arrive. We play it (and hand out shots of Archers) as people arrive for our show, and we can’t recommend the Archers/ Ri-Ri combo enough for immediately getting people into the party mood.
BEST BIT: The four hundred “You-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooooh’s”, because we love any song where you can sing along without really knowing any of the words.
‘I’m Drinking / Rum & Red Bull’ – Beenie Man & Fambo
WHY WE LOVE IT: It’s an unashamed celebration of getting lashed and rowdy.
WHEN TO PLAY IT: When you’re improvising weird cocktails with whatever alcohol you’ve dug out from the back of your cupboard. This’ll help people get into the adventurous spirit(s).
BEST BIT: The dancehall beat. It’s the ideal track for practising your dutty wine.
‘Rinse & Repeat’ – Riton Ft. Kah-Lo
WHY WE LOVE IT: It’s got a fierce ‘give a shit’ vibe that is perfect for getting you feeling confident before you leave.
WHEN TO PLAY IT: While you’re putting on your make-up. It’s the ultimate pout-along track.
BEST BIT: The dirty bassline. You can’t help but nod your head. On second thoughts, maybe pause it while you do your eyeliner.
‘Drunk In Love’ – Beyoncé
WHY WE LOVE IT: It’s the queen bee of Queen Bey tracks.
WHEN TO PLAY IT: Early doors, to give a flavour of how the night’s gonna go: uplifting, epic and messy.
BEST BIT: The very start, when you sing along to: “I been drinkin’, I been drinkin’” and realise that you are basically Beyoncé.
‘Peanut Butter Jelly’ – Galantis
WHY WE LOVE IT: It’s three minutes of pure party energy.
WHEN TO PLAY IT: When everyone’s starting to get their buzz on, this bad boy will take things up a gear.
BEST BIT: The drop. Like all the best drops, this one’s heralded by a horn blast.
‘Bubble Butt’ – Major Lazer
WHY WE LOVE IT: For the booty bouncin’. Camille’s mum and sister make her stand in the middle of their living room and shake her butt to this, or indeed any song that has even a whisper of a butt-shake.
WHEN TO PLAY IT: Whenever you’ve had enough gin and juice to gather everyone in the living room and make them watch you shake your butt.
BEST BIT: The line: ‘Make you vibrate like a Nokia’, because it reminds us of a simpler time when all you needed in life was a 3210 and a pair of platform trainers.
‘Too Many Man’ – Boy Better Know
WHY WE LOVE IT: Because we like to imagine that BBK are huge feminists and the song is a protest at the lack of equal gender representation in society.
WHEN TO PLAY IT: When things are starting to go off. It’s the perfect time to to slip a subtle feminist message into your pre-lash without people getting weird about it.
BEST BIT: The chorus. If Skepta says we need some more girls in here who are we to argue?
‘Dancing On My Own’ – Robyn
WHY WE LOVE IT: Because it’s comforting that we’re not the only ones that have had one of those nights out.
WHEN TO PLAY IT: When everyone is hyped. You gotta throw a bit of shade and prepare people for the shit parts of a night out too, like when you’ve lost everyone, the person you fancy is getting off with someone else and you have a little stand on your own in the corner dancing on your own like a maniac.
BEST BIT: Channelling your inner angsty teenager when you sing, “I’m right over here, why can’t you see me? Whooaaaooohh“.
‘Gasolina’ – Daddy Yankee
WHY WE LOVE IT: It’s not often you get a song that straddles the pre-lash / Zumba class categories, but Daddy Yankee’s smashed it with this track.
WHEN TO PLAY IT: Whenever there’s a dip in energy.
BEST BIT: Attempting to rap along to the hyper-fast Spanish lyrics at the start: “HUMANIMANOSOBRALICASOHOMAHOLENBOY!”
‘Titanium’ – David Guetta Ft. Sia
WHY WE LOVE IT: Because it’s the ultimate ‘fuck everyone we’re invincible’ anthem.
WHEN TO PLAY IT: Just before you leave the house.
BEST BIT: When the beat kicks in after the chorus and we lose control of our minds and arms.
The Birthday Girls’ Sh!t Hot Party Legends is at the Soho Theatre, London, from November 15 to 19 at 9.30pm.
