Five Things You Need To Know About ‘Creed’ Director Ryan Coogler

Creed is only his second movie

Creed is the sort of big name film that directors would usually only get once they’ve a few hits under their belt, but thanks to the natural storytelling skill he showed on his first project Coogler was trusted with the future of the Rocky franchise. In the US, Creed was one of the best reviewed movies of 2015.

His first was one of the best debuts ever

After making a few short films, Coogler made his feature debut with Fruitvale Station. Starring Michael B. Jordan in the lead role, it told the true story of Oscar Grant, who was shot and killed by police at Fruitvale Station on January 1, 2009. Poignant and powerful, it drew rave reviews and became a US box office hit, receiving a huge number of award nominations and winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

He’s only 29

Two movies and two hits before he’s even 30. It sort of makes you want to hate him, doesn’t it? Except you can’t because he’s so good at what he does.

He’s on the edge of very big things

For the past couple of months, Coogler’s name has been attached to Black Panther, an adaptation of the Marvel comic about an African prince (Chadwick Boseman) who takes over a superhero role from his father. Jobs in Hollywood don’t get much bigger than directing a Marvel movie.

He’s not just a filmmaker

Because Coogler is apparently brilliant at everything, he’s also announced that he’s working on a graphic novel and a young adult novel. If he’s as skilled a writer as a filmmaker then expect both to be hits.

Creed is released in the UK on January 15th.
