2014 was the year the selfie went mainstream. Even though it was named ‘word of the year’ by the Oxford Dictionary in 2013, peak selfie was reached when pretty much every Hollywood star gathered together around Bradley Cooper’s iPhone at the Oscars to say cheese:
We’ll count that one as music-related because Jared Leto of 30 Seconds Of Mars was on the sidelines. But what about the rest of the best in the music world this year? Here’s 11 more of our favourites.
The Vampire Weekend frontman’s Instagram feed is megalolz. He is a big fan of the selfie and has spoken out about his love for the photographic format. Top marks for experimentalism, too. To wit:
Rihanna v German World Cup players
Rihanna attended the World Cup final game between Germany and Argentina at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro and backed the Germans to win before the match began. Afterwards she attended the German team’s official winners party and posted a number of pictures of herself with the team’s players, including one with Mario Götze, who scored the winning goal in extra time of the final:
Jail selfie of the year goes to Wiz Khalifa, who was arrested in May after being stopped at an airport in Texas for being in position of some “green leafy substance.” Once in jail, Khalifa began tweeting out photos of himself and promoting a hashtag campaign, #FreetTrapWiz.
Chance The Rapper and James Blake
Chance and Blake moved in with each other earlier this year after collaborating on a remix to Blake’s song ‘Life Around Here’ in 2013. Chance said, “We’re probably going to make a bunch of shit every day. I don’t know what we’re going to do with it. We might give some shit to other artists. We’re getting a compound so we figure we might invite people round to the crib and make some music in the house, then kick them out and bring in some new people.”

In the clip, guitarist Jordan Buckley stops the fan taking a picture with his brother, frontman Keith Buckley, by kicking the phone from his hands. The fan and Buckley made up in the end:
