Grimes Is Back: 12 Deep Cut Non-Album Tracks That Might’ve Passed You By

For anyone counting down the days till Grimes releases her next album, ‘REALiTi’, uploaded on Sunday (March 8), will be a welcome pre-meal snack to tide us over. Writing an explanation of the song’s origins on YouTube, Claire Boucher wrote: “I lost the Ableton file, so its not mixed or mastered. I tried to doctor the MP3 into a listenable state, but it was poorly recorded in the first place and never meant to be heard by anyone, so its a bit of a mess haha.” It’s a demo dating back to 2013 and won’t feature on her album.

‘REALiTi’ marks the two year anniversary of Grimes visiting Asia for the first time and is meant as “a special thank you to everyone in Singapore, KL, Manila, Jakarta, HK, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Seoul, Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo who came out to the shows! It was an honour to play with a bunch of amazing bands and travel to places I would never otherwise be able to go.”

Grimes has released three albums over the last five years, ‘Geidi Primes’, ‘Halfaxa’ and ‘Visions’, but there’s little in the way of unreleased demos, collaborations or covers out there. We’ve scoured the internet to patch together a sort-of DIY mixtape of non-album tracks and collaborations put out by Grimes over the last couple of years. Have a very Grimes day!

‘Darkbloom’ is a split EP by Grimes and fellow Canadian musicians d’Eon. If you don’t know it, you should check it out. ‘Vanessa’, above, is a highlight.

‘Christmas Song II (grinch)

Grimes made this with her step-brother, writing on YouTube:

i like to periodically release songs since my album is taking so long and i make a lot of songs that i wouldn’t put on an album but i nonetheless enjoy so thats what this is.

me and my step bro jay worthy make an annual christmas song with our siblings in order to avoid obligatory dinner. this is NOT a single from the upcoming album, not a serious piece of art in any capacity and not an official grimes release

also —made this song in prob less than 2 hours so please excuse my terrible production, + it is not mixed or mastered.

Featuring LA artist Blood Diamonds and with a video co-directed by Roco-Prime (Claire Boucher and Mac Boucher), ‘Go’ gave 2014 one its most bombastic choruses.

‘Phone Sex’

A track primarily by fellow 4AD colleague Blood Diamonds featuring Grimes, ‘Phone Sex’ became a live favourite at her 2013 shows.

Grimes, Kreayshawn, Blood Diamonds, and Tragik joined forces under the name L$D for a song called ‘DONT SMOKE MY BLUNT BITCH’ in June 2012.

Membrain was/is a collaborative project between Grimes and Tim Lafontaine of experimental Canadian noise act Cop Car Bonfire. Grimes explained:

“it’s really a live thing.. and, membrain is like 90 % Tim i.e. cop car bonfire — i just do vocals for him but he’s the genius…Membrain is also basically a live improv drone techno act – so its really hard 2 get it from recordings”.

‘D r o m e’

In Grimes’ words:

i dunno this is like a halfaxa cut that didnt make it i think

‘D r o m e – emancipated reality vixen’

And another outtake:

weird old more just instrumental

‘Dream World’ – Majical Cloudz feat. Grimes

‘Dream World’ a track by Montreal buddy Majical Cloudz from a few years ago featuring Grimes on backing vocals. She also wrote a track with Devon Walsh about their obese cat :

found this song on my computer that me and dev of majical cloudz made in like 2009 about our cat voignamir who at the time was on very bad terms with us because we were forcing him to diet and so he was like, very violent but literally like 20 or 30 pounds. i dont know why it sounds like indie rock haha, neither of us really make music like this

‘Take Me Away’ – Bleachers feat. Grimes

Matey from .fun, guitarist Jack Antonoff, went into the studio with Grimes and she contributed backing vocals to this haunting track.
